GOLD COAST BULLETIN
Another old house is set to be demolished and replaced with a shiny new tower close to the Gold Coast’s world-famous beaches. But this tower is special – and its unique design was created by a local artist.
A SITE close to one of the Gold Coast’s most famous buildings will be transformed into a shiny new tower with a unique design dreamt up by a local artist.
The 17-story tower, from developer MDP, is planned for an 819 sqm site on Surfers Paradise’s Old Burleigh Road, just south of the $1 billion Jewel complex.

The boutique residential tower is earmarked to replace a single-level house on the strip.
It will feature 27 three-bedroom units, with 81 bedrooms in total.
Documents filed with council this week reveal details of the bespoke design planned for its podium, which will have “a custom and unique artwork, created by a local artist, embedded into the facade”.
‘END OF AN ERA’ – ICONIC GOLD COAST RESTAURANT CLOSES
“The 61 Old Burleigh Road artwork is composed of different material layers, to achieve a subtle sculptural effect,” a report on the project reads.
“The layers consist of slender white battens which surround the podium featuring rhythmical recesses and an etched wave pattern. A mirrored aluminium surface was introduced underneath to create shadow and light play and subtle textural interactions.

“This surface will capture the blue sky and elevated city views, which are key parts of the project identity. The tops of the battens are tapered to create negative space for the greenery to fall into.”
The project will go before the council’s planning committee later this year.
