Shining light for sport on Gold Coast

Gold Coast Bulletin

Is preparing to shine under the world spotlight as it gears up to host major parts of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Carrara Stadium 2

The $122-million development of the Carrara Sports Precinct will deliver a new sports and leisure centre, sports fields and upgrades to the indoor centre as well as Metricon Stadium.

The venue will be the epicentre of the 2018 Commonwealth Games when it hosts the opening and closing ceremonies, athletics, badminton, weightlifting and wrestling competitions.

Being home to Metricon Stadium, which is the base of the Gold Coast Suns, means the suburb sees an influx of AFL supporters to see games throughout the course of the year.

As well as AFL, Carrara is also often identified as a golfer’s paradise, boasting several prestigious courses including the Emerald Lakes Golf Club. The Australian PGA Championship is held annually at the Royal Pines Golf Course just down the road in Benowa. The major event attracts a host of international players and media.

It is not all about sport in Carrara with Carrara Markets being one of the Coast’s best-known permanent marketplaces with more than 400 stalls. It has been a tourist attraction for more than 30 years and continues to attract crowds every weekend.

Located adjacent to the M1 and south of the Nerang River, Carrara is one of the Gold Coast’s most diverse residential suburbs. Its convenient access to the Pacific Motorway is a major selling point of the suburb. Everything from waterfront mansions and resort-style living to executive homes and townhouses make up the mix. Median house prices have sky-rocketed in recent years with house prices up 15.9 per cent over three years to $475,000.

LJ Hooker Nerang agent Jane Doogan says a big selling point for Carrara is its location on the east of the M1. “People seem to have very strong feelings as to whether they’re east or west of the highway,” Jane says.

“There’s townhouses, through to duplexes and then houses with views and those in the million-dollar range. There’s a really good range in Carrara to suit most pockets.”

Emerald Lakes, a European-style development set around a 37ha man-made lake offers a variety of dwellings including villas, apartments and waterfront homes. Developer Urban Construct is building The Residences, set to include 124 two and three-bedroom villas.

The villas are a mix of two and three-storey and each has a double garage, with most having private yards. Emerald Lakes continues to soar in popularity with Sea-change Emerald Lakes, an over 50s village, due for completion in the second half of the year.

Another recent development is the $120 million Eleve Residences at Palm Meadows Resort. Avanti will offer apartments, ranging in size from 65sq m to 120sq m, in a resort enclave.

Avanti marketing agent Trent Milburn says Carrara’s central location is most appealing.

“Surrounded with all the Gold Coast has to offer, Carrara is an attractive lifestyle investment for homebuyers,” Trent says.

“The region is tightly held and dominated by owner-occupiers, making the opportunity to buy into a premium residential project such as Eleve highly sought after.” Eleve’s first stage will include 63 apartments with construction due to start by April. The community has a high level of public transport infrastructure being 2.5km from the Nerang Train Station and with several bus services running through the suburb.
